It’s All Askew: Spatial Transformations

Artworks by Barbara Cowlin

The Askew series features paintings derived from snapshots of architectural fragments reduced to essential shapes that emphasize ambiguous perspective, hard-edged forms, and simultaneous contrast in colors. The relationship between abstraction and representation creates additional tensions between the pictorial and actual space.

Phoenix Landmarks

Artworks by Manny Burruel

Phoenix landmarks are the focus of this series. Growing up here, Manny Burruel had the same iconic landmarks as most Phoenicians. However, some landmarks were personally significant only to him. The landmarks, or their spaces, evoked wistfulness or joy. Taking him back to important moments, they are markers of his life.
