Maintaining Legal Status
To keep your status as an F-1 student in the U.S. pay attention to the following:
- Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months at all times.
- Attend the school that issued the I-20.
- Be enrolled full time every semester. This is very. important. You must register for at least 12 credit hours every semester.
- File for an extension of your visa status if necessary before it runs out.
- Obtain proper authorization before you begin working on or off campus.
- Report any change of address.
- Follow proper procedures for transferring from one school to another.
All F-1 students are eligible for 12 months of OPT if you have maintained lawful status. This is an opportunity granted to eligible applicants by USCIS for work experience in the United States related to your program of study. You will get an opportunity for OPT after completion of your degree. You may be eligible for 12 months of OPT after completion of each level of study. You must apply 60 prior to completing your program.
As you are aware, you have many responsibilities while on a student visa in the United States. One of those responsibilities is that you are required to file paperwork with our Internal Revenue Service for income tax purposes. Stop by the International Student Center to pick up a list of locations that provide free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.
As an international student, you will be required to file the 1040 NR-EZ form and IRS form 8843. These forms can be picked up at the IRS building that is located on 3rd Street and Earll in Phoenix. They can also be downloaded by visiting the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov
Phoenix College International Student Center does not provide income tax assistance.
International students are eligible to work on campus as long as you are in status. The maximum number of hours you may work is 20 hours per week. It is not recommended that you work during your first semester at Phoenix College.
Students will need to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) to begin working on campus. In order to qualify for a SSN number you must have a student visa. Please visit the International Student Center for more information on how to obtain a SSN card.
The International Student Club at Phoenix college is group of International students including American students. Our membership is very simple. If you are a student at Phoenix College taking three or more than three credit hours, you can get involved in our club. International Club is a fun place to be in. With its culturally diverse body of members, all members have had very neat experiences. International Club serves as a connection for new students who find themselves lonely upon their arrival into the US. It introduces the old students to new students. It's the best place to make friends with people from other countries or even your own country.
International students make up the club. Students who are in the US on a student visa or were born in country other than the United States are considered international Students. We wanted to be as inclusive as possible so we extended the scope so that students like you could join. Students born in any country including the US are welcome to join us.
