CUREs in HSIs 2022 - Consensus Report

Cures2022

CUREs are widely recognized for engaging students in research projects, as they develop degree-specific interest in STEM, through coursework. CUREs also foster inquiry and critical thinking skills among students. The conference will capture your interest through a series of workshops, discussions, and hands-on activities.

The conference expands on two previous STEM in HSIs conferences, which were also funded by the NSF:

Conference outcomes will add to knowledge generated by preceding events, particularly on the challenges associated with CURE implementation in 2- and 4-year HSIs.

You'll leave with new insights about:
  • Equity-minded models for CURE design, implementation, and assessment
  • 4- and 2-year college partnerships, collaborative strategies for CURE implementation, and industry engagement
  • High impact practices in STEM teaching and learning
  • Best practices for improving success rates of HSIs: through external funding used to support high impact educational interventions.

The conference builds on previous NSF funded STEM in HSIs conferences: University of Arizona 2018 HSI Conference “Transforming STEM Education in HSIs: Regional Insights from the Southwest” and Central Arizona College 2020 HSI Conference “Transforming STEM Education at Rural HSIs Across the Nation.” Conference outcomes will add to the knowledge generated from these events by examining the challenges associated with CURE implementation in 2-year and 4-year HSIs.

Specifically, you will learn about:

  • Equity-minded models for CURE design, implementation, and assessment
  • 4-year and 2-year college partnership and collaborative strategies for CURE implementation and industry engagement
  • Improved understanding of high impact practices in STEM teaching and learning

Best practices for improving the success rate of HSIs in obtaining external funding to support high impact educational interventions.

Session Descriptions

Sessions will reflect the process followed when selecting, designing, and implementing a CURE and assessing its impact on student success parameters.  In each, session lead facilitators and participants will examine CURE case studies for addressing the session main topic and for prompting discussion and interaction among participants.

Sessions will be structured as workshops, with a very short introduction and presentation by the lead facilitators, close analysis of CURE case studies, input from participants, and final discussion.  For discussions to be more effective, participants will be considering pre-determined scripted questions addressing five discussion topics:

  1. Gaps and Needs
  2. Barriers and Challenges;
  3. Defining Success;
  4. Opportunities and Priorities; and
  5. Funding and Collaborative Opportunities.

Sessions will happen sequentially, reflecting the process and steps involved in CURE implementation and assessment.  Participants will attend sessions one at a time.
