Since its founding almost 100 years ago, social justice has been a cornerstone of Phoenix College. This month, a pair of Phoenix College events will continue that legacy with two extremely visual and compelling presentations in the coming weeks.
First, the College will post a film screening and discussion of "And Then They Came for Us" on Tuesday, November 13, at 6 p.m. in the Dome Conference Room, on the Phoenix College’s Osborn Campus.
In 1942 FDR's Executive Order 9066 paved the way to the profound violation of constitutional rights - the forced incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans. "And Then They Came for Us" brings history into the present, retelling this difficult story and following Japanese American activists as they speak out against the present-day Muslim registry and travel ban. Knowing and understanding our history is the first step to ensuring we do not repeat it. The film also features photographs from the internment camps taken by Dorothea Lange that were seized and impounded by the military only to be seen and opened in 2006.
Phoenix College’s former Dean of Instruction Marian Tadano who was incarcerated with her family during this time, will speak on her experiences as part of the program.
Secondly, an interactive theater and sensory-based multimedia experience called "The Tunnel of Oppression" will take place on Wednesday, November 14th from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
The program highlights contemporary issues of oppression and is designed to challenge participants to think more deeply about oppression, privilege, and power. This year’s iteration of the Tunnel will focus on the stages of genocide, an unfortunately relevant issue in today’s world.
The immersive and interactive program lasts between 1-2 hours and will also have interview and photo opportunities for members of the media.
