Born in Mexico City, Luis immigrated to the United States at the age of ten, initially settling in Anaheim, California. His early years were marked by transitions, including living apart from his mother and adapting to a new culture. By his sophomore year of high school, Luis and his family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, a move he initially resisted. However, over time, Arizona became a place he now proudly calls home.
Early Struggles and Educational Detours
After graduating from Washington High School in Phoenix, Arizona, Luis began his higher education journey at Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC). Like many first-generation students, he faced the challenge of balancing work and studies. From a young age, Luis had been accustomed to working to support himself and his family. This juggling act made it difficult for him to maintain a full course load, and he often had to pause his education.
“I’ve always worked, even in high school,” Luis shared. “Trying to manage both a full-time job and a full-time school schedule was nearly impossible.”
Luis’s educational journey became a patchwork of online classes at different colleges, including Glendale Community College and Phoenix College. The COVID-19 pandemic added another layer of difficulty, pushing him to make tough decisions about his priorities. Ultimately, he took a year-and-a-half break from school, feeling the weight of financial constraints and the demands of life. Despite these setbacks, Luis never let go of his dream of earning a degree.
Discovering His Passion for Law
Luis initially pursued a degree in forensic science, driven by his fascination with law and crime scenes. However, he quickly realized that the field took a toll on his mental health. The dark and distressing nature of forensic studies left him feeling drained. “It was a very negative environment,” Luis explained. “I felt like I was constantly surrounded by tragedy, and I couldn’t see myself doing that every day for the rest of my life.”
This realization led Luis to reassess his goals and discover a new passion: becoming a paralegal. The legal field offered him the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while aligning with his skills and interests. As a paralegal, Luis could support attorneys, interact with clients, and be a bridge for those navigating the complexities of the legal system. His bilingual abilities and cultural background positioned him uniquely to serve the Latino community, a goal close to his heart.
“I want to be the face of a law firm and let people know I’m here to help,” Luis said. “I want to make the legal process less intimidating, especially for those who feel lost because of language barriers.”

Luis credits much of his success to the supportive environment at Phoenix College. Returning to the college after his break, he found a wealth of resources and compassionate faculty who helped him regain his footing. One individual who stood out was Nancy Nageotte, an adviser dedicated to the paralegal program. Nancy not only guided Luis through the application process but also helped him navigate financial aid challenges, including an appeal for his eligibility due to his previous associate degree in forensic science.
Nancy Nageotte, immediately recognized Luis’s determination. Recalling their first advising appointment, she shared, “When Luis and I first met, I could tell he was a go-getter. As a first-generation college student, he began his quest for education with gusto. I’ve worked with many students who struggle to balance full-time work and school. We discussed a plan for him to take three classes per semester instead of four, and that adjustment made all the difference. Now, he’s on track to graduate in spring 2025.”
“Without Nancy, I wouldn’t even be in the program,” Luis acknowledged. “She kept me informed, followed up with me, and made sure I had everything I needed to succeed.”
The resources available at Phoenix College were another critical factor in Luis’s journey. From student relief checks during the pandemic to free software subscriptions for essential tools like Microsoft Word and Excel, the college provided him with the tools to focus on his studies. Luis also appreciated the campus’s welcoming atmosphere, describing it as a blend of modernity and tradition that made him feel at home.

He plans to take his certification exams to become a Certified Paralegal and explore different specializations within the field. While his immediate goal is to gain experience as a paralegal, Luis has not ruled out the possibility of attending law school.
“I’m taking it one step at a time,” Luis said. “But I feel confident in my path, and I’m excited to see where it leads.”
Luis’s ultimate dream is to use his legal expertise to serve the Latino community. Recognizing the barriers many immigrants face, he hopes to provide legal services in Spanish and create a welcoming environment for those seeking help. His empathy, dedication, and bilingual skills make him a beacon of hope for many who feel marginalized or overwhelmed by the legal system.
