Dr. Allison Hawn: Public Scholar
Allison Hawn is fully engaged in sharing her knowledge with students, and others who seek out her expertise. For her Ph.D. in Communication, Allison spent four years in tattoo shops across the US researching the communicative practices of tattoo artists, the history of colonialism in Western tattooing practices, and ways that tattoo artists can democratize the world of fine art. “I noticed a ton of research on why people get tattoos and people’s perceptions of tattoos, but there was nothing on tattoo artists. That’s why I started this research,” she said, “to give them a voice in an area that has traditionally ignored them.”

Zahraa Alfatlawi: Fierce Healthcare Advocate and Fashionista
Zahraa Alfatlawi epitomizes “Yes, and” when it comes to her present, her future, and how she can be of service. A senior at Central High School, where she is President of the Honors Marketing Program and Chief Science Officer, Zahraa is also a Phoenix College dual-enrollment student who participates in the Achieving College Education (ACE) program, where she has earned a whopping 42 college credits from her two years in the program.

Hermanas are Designing the Future
“Hands on”, “cool”, and “informational” were some of the ways 137 young women from Phoenix Union High School District described the faculty-led activities during the Hermanas Conference on February 24, 2023 at Phoenix College (PC). Funded by the APS Foundation, the Hermanas conference seeks to increase the number of underrepresented female students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and impact the diversity of the STEM workforce.

PC Awarded Housing Grant to Support Students
Although the housing crisis has made housing unfathomable for millions of Americans, the housing crisis is felt acutely by community college students. In 2020, 52% of all community college students reported experiencing housing insecurity, where housing often costs more than tuition. Housing insecurity includes unaffordable housing, poor housing quality, crowding, and frequent moves.

Ashley Burns: Wisdom and Well-being
Ashley opens the door and welcomes students as they cross the hardwood floor to retrieve plum-colored yoga mats, bright blue yoga blocks, multi-colored bolsters, and gray wool blankets from the tall metal shelves along the white block wall. Ashley carefully unpacks the crystal singing bowls from their protective case and instructs students in her soothing voice: "Take what you need."
