WHAT IS GIS?
Geographical Information System (GIS) is a software system that allows for the spatial analyses of data to be presented in the form of a map. GIS is a universal tool that is used in the physical sciences, social sciences, marketing, business and real estate. Here are some specific examples of GIS applications:
- Examining river erosion through time using aerial and satellite image analysis.
- Analyzing changes in sea surface temperatures to predict changes in hurricane magnitude and frequency using data from government agencies such as NOAA.
- Create maps using economic and demographic data that display suggested locations for the suitability of a new business location.
- Creating maps of cities and associated urban sprawl.
- Creating maps that show which habitat a specific animal species is thriving in.
