Academics

Phoenix College is one of the ten Maricopa Community Colleges, which offer a wide variety of degree and certificate programs. We have transfer articulation agreements with public and private colleges and universities that enable seamless transfer to four-year institutions.

Many students complete their first two years at a community college, earning an Associate’s Degree, and then transfers to a four-year college or university to complete two or more years for a Bachelor’s degree.

Tips for Academic Success

  • Acquire the information needed to assume final responsibility for course scheduling, program planning, and the successful completion of all graduation requirements.
  • Use the College Catalog, Student Handbook, the Programs and Degrees website, and the Advisement and Registration Services website to find out about General Education requirements as well as, program requirements and to check prerequisites for courses.
  • Know about College rules, requirements, policies, and procedures as defined in the Catalog.
  • Be aware of important dates and deadlines (e.g., the last day to drop a course), available in the Academic Calendar.
  • Check your Google Apps email account and Message Center in the Student Center regularly, read messages from official college offices, and respond as appropriate.
  • Maintain your own academic worksheet by using the various academic resources available on the Center for Curriculum and Transfer Articulation website.
  • Schedule an appointment at least once each semester with the International Advisor who works with your program of study to update your academic worksheet and to ensure you are making steady progress towards graduation.
  • Come to your appointments on time and prepared.
  • Be courteous and respectful. Turn off your cell phone before you enter your appointment.
  • Seek assistance from your advisor whenever you have academic concerns or difficulties.

An F-1 student cannot receive a “W” or “Y” as a final grade IF this will bring your enrollment to less than 12 credit hours per semester.

If you are having difficulty with a class, speak with the instructor immediately.  Consider assistance from a tutor.

You must receive permission from the International Student Advisor before you withdraw from a class.

Be aware that an instructor can withdraw you from a class (give you a “W”) due to excessive absences, AND the instructor is not obligated to tell you that you will be withdrawn.

When do I apply for graduation?

Upon completing the course requirements for an Associate’s degree, students need to petition for graduation during their final semester when all requirements will be met.

  • Graduation petition forms are available at the and must be submitted to the Admissions Office by the established deadlines.
  • Students who are eligible to graduate are invited to participate in the yearly Graduation Commencement ceremony held in May.

Transferring to a University

Phoenix College prepares students so they will be eligible to transfer to an university with junior (third year) standing. Community colleges such as PC are generally considered the first two years of the university.  PC has established numerous articulation agreements, MAPPS and pathways with various colleges and universities to have a seamless transfer process.

To transfer:

  • Contact the school you want to transfer to as early as possible to begin the transfer process.
  • When you have been accepted at the school, bring your acceptance letter to the International Education Program office, and we will transfer your SEVIS record to the school.

The Transfer Center (Lower level of HC) offers an extensive array of services and events for students planning to transfer to a university. Students can attend workshops on how to transfer and meet with university representatives on the PC campus.
